What type of varnish is used on plastic?

use clear lacquer. its the same stuff they use on guitars, so its pretty tough, scratch and mark resistant. its best to use a spray lacquer to prevent brush marks. do it thin layers at a time, and you wont get drip marks either. you may want to practice with a spray can first if you havent used one before.
